Patient Support Living with HF
When you have HF, it’s important to eat a balanced diet high in heart-healthy foods and low in salt. Salt causes the body to retain water, which can cause swelling and make it even harder for the heart to pump. And like any muscle, the heart may benefit from physical activity. Be sure to check with your doctor to find out which activities are right for you. For help living with HF, there’s ENTRESTO Central.
When you have HF, it’s important to know how to read labels correctly. For example, if a can of soup contains 2 servings and each serving has 500 mg of sodium, then eating the entire can adds up to 1,000 mg of sodium total. Simply multiply the number of servings by the sodium content listed to get the total amount of salt in the package.

Try opting for fresh or frozen vegetables over canned vegetables, lean cuts of meat like chicken and fish, and fresh foods over prepackaged choices.
When cooking at home, try selecting healthy proteins, like chicken or fish, and roasting or steaming them instead of frying them in oil. You should also try to eat a variety of foods to get the nutrition you need. And remember, cooking without salt doesn’t mean your food has to be boring. Try swapping salt for spices like cayenne or oregano for an added kick.
Engaging in everyday activities is a great way to stay active. 2,000 steps add up to approximately 1 mile of walking, so every little bit helps. Even vacuuming the house or raking the yard counts.
Start with a walk to the mailbox and build from there. To give you a sense of distance, 15 blocks is the approximate equivalent of walking 1 mile. Grab a friend or family member and make it a social affair.
You can be active even when watching television. Start by standing during commercial breaks. Try mixing it up with light stretching. While seated, roll your shoulders or squeeze a ball. Remember, every little bit helps.
